When this is useful
The most common uses:
- Cooking with a metric recipe. "240 ml of milk, 30 g of flour": convert to cups and tablespoons. 240 ml ≈ 1 cup.
- Fueling abroad. "20 gallons of gas", that's 76 liters (US gallon). In the UK a gallon is 4.55 l (so 20 gallons = 91 l).

Questions and answers
1 US cup = 237 ml (approximately 240 ml for convenience). UK cup = 250 ml. Metric cup = 250 ml. About a 5% difference, sometimes enough for a recipe to misfire.
